Catenary Arches

Catena is Latin for chain

and a chain hung slack

from each end hangs

in a curve, which if

welded and flipped

upside down forms

a catenary arch.

The most stable arch

for masonry is this.

Thrust force lines

are kept within

the width of the wall

and it won’t fall.
